Prompt: It’s 2AM and your phone has just buzzed you awake, filling the room in white-blue LED light. You have a message. It’s a photo. No words, no explanation. Just a photo. Tell us all about it. And what happens next.
There are three lights now. One flashing. Two constant. The bright deep blue of the charger as it flows a current to my dysfunctional laptop. Unfortunately, its equipped with a butterfinger battery so it can’t hold a charge.
The green…you know the green. The green that watches you while you sleep. The green that has a switch for two modes–“bright” and “dim”–which, as it turns out, was put there for aesthetic rather than functional purposes. The green says 2:33 but its really 2am because poor time management coupled with vampire-like tendencies have taught you that setting the clock thirty minutes ahead is the only way to function normally.
Looking away I see the flashing. Reminiscent of baby blue skies and a cloud filled backdrop. The Samsung light has been programmed to flash blue on notifications for text messages….and social media interactions….and emails….dammit. Still drunk with sleep, my eyes reflexively begin to squint as my mind comes to the realization that I’m not going to ignore it.
A half blind fumble through the lock screen reveals a pop up window with a name and a picture download button. She had been in my thoughts a lot recently but for one reason or another I just never got around to calling her. We haven’t really talked in a while. Its sad really, because when we did talk, we talked about everything. In between my consistent flirting of course. The banter was always long lasting but never without laughter or heart. I admit freely, the woman captivates my soul. Strong thoughts for two in the morning but I’ve always had a particularly amorous disposition when it comes to her. An inclination I like to think was mutual.
It was weird then, that I felt the longer we went without speaking, the more I would be interrupting her life somehow by jumping back in. My subconscious must be in the driver seat now. Utilizing information I have long since purged from active memory. Information from years past, when this very woman had disappeared after a similar stint of excitement and connection. It came to light only much later that the reason for the vanishing act was related to a new boyfriend. Maybe my inner mind was keeping me from something I secretly suspected but didn’t want to know. Maybe I’m just being crazy. Long distance fairy tales are made to fail anyway, right?
Finally the picture has finished loading. Now, staring back at me is none other than she. One hand raised, palm up, just a few inches forward from her face. Lips natural with beauty of shape, size and color–wearing no make-up–blowing what seems the most passionate kiss…..she had me at download button.
I awake violently to an inordinate amount of noise coming from my phone.
I quickly silence it before looking up at the green.
It says 2:33.
I look back at the phone only to see the baby blue flashing.
Anticipation mounting, I unlock the phone to find…
